With all the circulating news about our current times, sometimes it’s hard to know what rules to follow. Here at MVC and WVC, we are going to help provide you with simple and safe tips on contact lens wear. 1. It is safe to wear your contact lenses!
As long as you are wearing your contact lenses as directed by your optometrist, you are not at any added risk of catching COVID-19. Make sure you are not sleeping/napping or showering in your contact lenses. Dispose of them properly as directed by your optometrist. Don’t stretch out those lenses. An eye infection is not worth it!
2. Excellent hygiene is crucial!
Remember to wash your hands with both contact lens insertion and removal. Rub your contact lenses for 20 seconds on both sides in the palm of your hand with contact lens solution. Always use fresh contact lens solution when you store your contact lenses. In the morning after contact lens insertion, pour out your old solution and let your case air dry. Wash your contact lens case once a week to get rid of any built-up residue.
3. Everyday spectacles/eyeglasses do not provide proper protection against COVID-19.
It is very important to wear your glasses to give your eyes a break from contact lenses. This will help prevent over wear and infection. If your glasses are due for a change, put it on the top of your to-do list post-COVID-19.
4. Keep those unwashed hands away from your face.
This is always true, but extra important these days. If you are instilling a drop of artificial tears, that is safe to use with contact lenses, make sure your hands are clean as well. It is important that the tip of the artificial tears bottle is not contaminated. If you are running low on drops approved for contact lenses, make sure you check our online shop for doctor recommended eye drops!
5. If you are feeling ill, temporarily stop wearing your contacts and switch to glasses instead.
There have been cases in which individuals with COVID-19 developed eye infections. To err on the side of caution, if you have any cold or flu symptoms make sure to wear your glasses. This will help ensure that you do not add any further complications to your current condition.
