Happy June, MVC fam! We are so proud to share that we are celebrating Pride Month all through June, and when you pop into the clinic you won’t miss our fabulous Pride décor. We have turned our rainbow colours up all around the office with multi-coloured bunting and rainbows galore. While splashy decorations sure help with the vibe, what is even more exciting is that $4 from every eye exam during the month of June will go toward the Ten Oaks Project and their life-saving, life-affirming work for the 2SLGTBQ+ community in and around the Ottawa area. Please join us in supporting the Ten Oaks Project by scheduling your eye exam during June, your eyes and the community will thank you!
The Ten Oaks Project is an Ottawa-based charitable organization working to help children, youth, and families from 2SLGBTQ+ (two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer) communities thrive. Holly and Julia Wagg co-founded the Ten Oaks Project in 2004 because they noticed a gap in services for the children and youth of 2SLGBTQ+ families in the National Capital Region. The first program to grow out of this vision was Camp Ten Oaks, later followed by Rainbow Families, Project Acorn, Oak Grove Family Camp, and Camp Lifting Leaves. The Ten Oaks Project engages and connects children and youth from 2SLGTBQ+ communities through programs and activities rooted in play via camps and local programs for children, youth, and families, as they strive to create safer spaces and grow positive peer networks for all children and youth.
The Ten Oaks Project embodies five core values: empowerment through play, learning by doing, social justice, collaboration and innovation, and people. The Ten Oaks project offers four annual camp programs to children and youth: Camp Ten Oaks (ages 8-17), Project Acorn (ages 16-24), Oak Grove Family Camp (all ages), and Camp Lifting Leaves (ages 8-21). They also offer a series of workshops for summer camp providers to help them build capacity to welcome campers from 2SLGBTQ+ communities. We celebrate and encourage diversity during Pride Month and every day of the year! Come in to see us for your eye exam and support local youth while taking care of your ocular health.
