Have you ever experienced an annoying eyelid twitch that won't go away? To make matters worse, have you ever noticed that the twitch always appears at the most inconvenient times?
Luckily, eyelid twitches are typically not an emergency and will resolve on its own. The eyelid muscle fibres are one of the fastest working muscles in the body and when things are out of sync, you may notice the eyelid acting erratically!
Here are some common causes of an eyelid twitches:
Caffeine
Try cutting down your intake of caffeine and make sure you stay hydrated to offset any dehydration. Dry eyes can also exacerbate eyelid twitches so hydration is very important!
Fatigue
Make sure you are getting a good night's rest daily to keep your eyes rested. With screen time, make sure you are taking a 15 min break for every 2 hours of screen use. For every 20 mins take a 20-second break and look 20 feet away to relax those eyes (20-20-20 rule).
Stress
These days life is especially stressful! Take a moment to do something that will help keep you relaxed. Try and close your eyes for a short meditation or take a break and enjoy the outdoors!
Try reducing all three of the common causes of eyelid twitches. Another suggestion is to use an ice pack on the twitch to try and calm down the muscle in order to help break the cycle. Eyelid twitches are annoying and can take weeks to go away.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, be sure to book an appointment with our optometrists so further testing can be performed. Take care!
